Career ladder

Your way up

In care, you can work your way up step by step – from career changer to management. Start where you are today.

  1. Entry

    Support & housekeeping

Start without care training: shopping, housework, accompaniment and company. A qualification as a support worker (§ 53b SGB XI) makes the next step easier.

    Requirement
    Enjoy working with people
    Duration
    possible right away
  2. Step 2

    Care assistant

Support with basic care. With training as a nursing assistant (Pflegefachhelfer/in) you officially become a care assistant.

    Requirement
    Training as a nursing assistant
    Duration
    usually 1 year in Bavaria
  3. Step 3

    Registered nurse

Basic and medical care on your own responsibility. The way there: the general nursing training – or recognition of your qualification from abroad.

    Requirement
    Training or recognition
    Duration
3 years, often shorter with assistant training
  4. Step 4

    Specialisation

Deepen your knowledge with further training – for example as a wound care expert, in palliative care or as a practical instructor for new colleagues.

    Requirement
    Experience as a registered nurse
    Duration
    alongside your job
  5. Step 5

    Nursing manager

Responsibility for the team, planning and quality. As the responsible registered nurse, you manage the care service.

    Requirement
2 years of experience + management training
    Duration
at least 460 hours (§ 71 SGB XI)

Qualification from abroad?

Please apply anyway. To work as a registered nurse in Germany, a foreign qualification must be recognised – for this you usually need German at level B2. Until then, you can work as a care assistant or in support, for example, and work your way up step by step. Simply tell us in the form how far along you are.

Which step will you start on?

Wound management

More than a bandage

Applying a bandage alone is not enough for successful wound treatment.

Successful wound therapy takes into account all factors that slow down healing. Professional wound management means treating the causes and underlying illnesses as well, and using all additional supportive measures according to the latest scientific standards.

Costs

Who pays for care?

Long-term care insurance (Pflegeversicherung) provides financial support for people in need of care. Benefits are granted on application to the long-term care fund, which belongs to your health insurance company.

with a doctor's prescription

Health insurance (Krankenkasse)

Medical care such as injections, preparing and giving medication or putting on and taking off compression stockings is paid for by the health insurance – regardless of the care level.

What we do: medical care as prescribed, billed directly to the insurance.

from care level 1

Long-term care fund (Pflegekasse)

Everyone with health or long-term care insurance who needs support in daily life is entitled. How much is determined by the Medical Service (Medizinischer Dienst) during an assessment – this results in the care level (Pflegegrad 1 to 5).

What we do: basic care, support, housekeeping, relief services – and help with the application.

private

Private support

Support not covered by any insurance is charged by the hours worked or at an individually agreed flat rate. Family members can deduct part of the costs from their taxes.

What we do: company, outings, shopping, housework – as often as you like.

What are you entitled to?

Choose the care level (Pflegegrad) – this is what long-term care insurance pays (as of 2026).

Care services (Sachleistung)796 €per month – for a care service like ARTANS
Care allowance (Pflegegeld)347 €per month – if family members provide care
Relief amount (Entlastungsbetrag)131 €per month – e.g. for support and housekeeping
Respite & short-term care3.539 €per year – joint annual amount

Care services and care allowance can be combined proportionally. With care level 1 you receive the relief amount, but no care allowance and no care services yet. All information without guarantee – your long-term care fund is binding. More about respite care

No care level yet? We explain how to apply for it and guide you through the application.

Frequently asked questions

Answered briefly

Which costs does the insurance cover?

Medical care – for example injections, preparing and giving medication or putting on and taking off compression stockings – is paid for by the health insurance if your doctor prescribes it. After an assessment, long-term care insurance covers a large part of the services for your care needs. We are happy to help you with the application.

Do I need a care level?

For benefits from long-term care insurance, yes. You apply for the care level (Pflegegrad) at your long-term care fund; the Medical Service then assesses how much support you need in daily life. No care level is needed for medical care prescribed by a doctor.

Do you speak my language?

Quite possibly: 27 languages are spoken in our team. We also provide care according to your religious and cultural needs. Just ask us on the phone about your language.

How much does private support cost?

Support not covered by any insurance is charged by the hours actually worked or at an individually agreed flat rate – depending on type and scope. These costs are paid privately; family members can deduct part of them from their taxes.

Does the training for family carers cost anything?

Care advice and training under § 45 SGB XI is free of charge for people insured with any private or statutory long-term care fund, for recipients of social welfare and for people who have applied for a care level. More about the training

Do you offer a home emergency call?

Yes, in cooperation with the Malteser. We advise you on which device is right for you and take care of the setup.

When can I reach your office?

Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm at 089 / 350 99 380. You can send us an enquiry at any time using the form or by email.
